Sand, Surprises, & Family Fun at Great Sand Dunes National Park

Let me start with a confession: I’ve never been the world’s biggest fan of sand. Give me a forest hike over a day at the beach any time! But visiting Great Sand Dunes National Park with my family? That changed everything.

It Starts with a Scenic Surprise

The drive alone is worth mentioning—you weave through a cozy Colorado town and suddenly, as if dropped from above, the dunes appear on the horizon. It’s wild: like the mountains woke up one morning covered in millions of tons of silky sand. Seeing this natural wonder sparks BIG questions (my kids asked them all): How did it get here? How long has this desert landscape been hanging out in Colorado? The answers span thousands of years, but in the moment, we just stood in awe.

Why Bring Your Family?

If you’re anywhere near southern Colorado—Denver, Trinidad, Pueblo, even just passing through—make the detour to visit these dunes. Even if you’re like me and not sure about sand, you’ll be amazed. There’s not much else around, but honestly, you don’t need it. The park is its own adventure.

Sleds, Sandboards, and Sand Castles

Pro tip: Don’t enter the park empty-handed. We stopped at the rental shop right before the entrance (impossible to miss!) for sand sleds and a sandboard. My husband, always the thrill-seeker, went all-in on the sandboard (his longboarding skills paying off!) while the kids and I opted for sleds. We also spotted families building sandcastles at the base—think “beach day,” just with a dramatic mountain backdrop!

The Dune Trek: Get Ready to Walk

Here’s what got us: The “short walk” to the dunes is both manageable and deceptively strenuous. What looks like a quick stroll is actually a sandy, calf-burning hike, especially if you want the best sledding slopes. We took about 15 minutes (with plenty of breaks), reminding ourselves that walking on sand is, well, harder than it looks.

Sand Safety: Protect Yourself!

Melanin or not, sun protection is non-negotiable here. We wore sun-blocking shirts, long pants, hats, and sunglasses (those wind gusts can really send the sand flying!). Sunscreen is a family must-have, trust me!

Adventures for Days

You can go as far as you like—there were some real explorers trekking up the tallest dunes, looking like tiny dots on the horizon. Just bring water, sturdy shoes, and a willingness to embrace the sand.

The Sand Stays With You

Three weeks post-visit and my van’s still rolling with Great Sand Dunes sand as a souvenir. It’s like the beach, but on a monumental scale.

TL;DR: Don’t miss Great Sand Dunes. Bring your sense of adventure (and maybe a portable vacuum for after…).

Ready for a sand adventure even a sand-skeptic will love? Grab the family, slap on your hats, and see it for yourself. It’s truly remarkable.
